BACKGROUND:
In the parallel present of Marvel's shared universe, technology is a bit more advanced, thanks in part to the breakthroughs of high-profile personalities like Reed Richards and Tony Stark. While much of it is off the market for the general public, someone can still access and use such advanced technology if they have the brains, the money, and the means.

Tomeo Takachiho was no Reed Richards, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a wealthy and brilliant industrialist in his own right. His billion-dollar company probably could have given Stark Industries a run for its money in the international market, had Tomeo not devoted so much of his time to his family. But he loved his wife and son dearly. They were his everything, his entire world, and nothing could ever outrank them in his heart.

It wasn't long after becoming a father that Tomeo recognized his son's genius. Little Hiro Takachiho was brilliant; By age 2, he was already attending preschool, and was soon accepted into the prestigious Tesuka Advanced Science Institute.

Tomeo and his wife Maemi recognized Hiro's genius as something to be cherished and nurtured. However, Tomeo and Maemi were also very genre-savvy parents living in Earth-616 -- special children were never simply just 'special', and did not often grow up to live normal lives. Having lived through the terror of attacks from villains like Onslaught, the Mandarin, and Dr. Doom, the Takachihos were terrified of what fate might befall their son because of his gift. They promised one another that, at the very least, Hiro would have a childhood. No matter what happened, they would discourage him from pursuing anything superhero related as long as he was young.

And so Hiro grew up, nurtured and loved by two parents who could provide the emotional and monetary support for him to embrace his gifts. Being the child prodigy that he was, Hiro often felt isolated from other kids his age. His best friend in the world was his father, as the two of them could connect on a level of intelligence that none of their peers could match. The two were extremely close, and Tomeo was the best father he knew how to be, trying to instill values of honesty, integrity and responsibility.

By the time Hiro was seven or eight years old, he was just the right combination of millionaire, genius, and bored to try his hand at a little robotics project to kill some time. He began construction on a synthformer, a robot with the power to shift between different physical appearances.

However, during the time Hiro was working on that project, tragedy struck. Tomeo was in a terrible car accident, and despite being treated with quick and top of the line medical care, was declared brain dead at the hospital. Unable to cope with the grief, Hiro managed to sneak enough equipment into the hospital to download a copy of his father's consciousness before the plug was pulled and Tomeo passed. Suddenly frightened of how cruel and terrifying the world could truly be, and desperate to have his father back no matter what, Hiro shifted gears on his synthformer project: The robot was outfitted with monster strength and an even more monstrous appearance -- the robot would be his personal bodyguard.

As a finishing touch, Hiro integrated his late father's personality and memories, everything he managed to download at the hospital, into the robot's programming. He would have his father back, and they would never be apart again.

Tomeo, now called Monster Baymax (or just Baymax) had a bit of a disconnect between his own programming and Tomeo's personality at the beginning. For the first few years his speech was stiff and robotic, and he more often called Hiro "master" instead of "son". Despite this, it was clear that Tomeo was there, and loved his wife and son just as deeply and dearly as he had during his life. Even with his stiff speech and awkward syntax, Baymax was capable of expressing joy, affection, frustration, sarcasm, humor, and even dad jokes. He took to the role as Hiro's bodyguard quite readily, keeping close to his son's side and keeping him safe. He began to take on a nanny role as well, making sure his son tended to his own responsibilities, often much to Hiro's chagrin.

Hiro and Baymax decided together not to tell Maemi the truth about his new robotics project, and to this day she's still unaware, even though Baymax longs to speak with her as her husband once more, not just as her son's science project.

As the years passed and news of Hiro's genius became more widespread, the Takachiho's fears began to manifest. Hiro was approached by a representative of the Japanese government to join Big Hero 6, the superhero team project designed as a response to other well-known teams like Alpha Flight and the Avengers. Hiro turned them down, but fate had different ideas. A villain called the Everwraith kidnapped Maemi, dragging Hiro and Baymax onto the battlefield alongside Big Hero 6 against their wills.

When Japan was in danger of a country-wide nuclear fallout, Baymax tried to drag Hiro away and get him out of harm's way before the danger struck. Hiro, however, was determined to do his part in saving the country, as well as saving his mother, who was still in the Everwraith's clutches -- and he convinced Baymax to grudgingly stay by reminding him that Maemi was still in danger.

At the eleventh hour, when Hiro was risking his life trying to help another superhero, Baymax was frozen and conflicted knowing both Hiro and Maemi were in danger, but he couldn't protect them both. In the end, Tomeo's personality overcame Baymax's programming as he chose to trust Hiro's judgment and protect Maemi.

That adventure set the tone for their career in the superhero business together as part of the team. Hiro and Baymax soon found their niche within the group dynamic, with Hiro functioning as the brains (specifically, acting as sort of a detective/investigator) while Baymax provided muscle. As the two of them settled into their new place in the world, Baymax's focus shifted. Whereas once his goal was to keep Hiro safe at all costs, now it was to ensure Hiro could safely and effectively do his job.

A few years and upgrades later, Hiro was noticing that Baymax was becoming more and more independent and self-aware; Baymax, likewise, could see that Hiro was growing up, and starting to consider the possibility that Hiro may not (and rightfully should not) need him as a caretaker for very much longer. Hiro was becoming more responsible, assertive, and independent, and Baymax is nurturing and fostering that growth wherever he can. He even crafted a powersuit that would enhance Hiro's strength and defense in battle, allowing them both a greater degree of independence.

PERSONALITY:
Baymax's programming, in the beginning, seemed to stilt Tomeo's personality slightly; His words often came out stiff and forced, with sentences framed around awkward syntax. However, it was soon clear that the apparent stiffness of Baymax's personality was only surface-level. He was still very much capable of feeling every one of Tomeo's emotions as deeply as he had as a human, to the point where Hiro could override Baymax's programming simply by guilt-tripping him when the situation was dire enough.

Outside of battle, Baymax has shown himself to be polite, kind, affectionate, wise, and even romantic. He has a huge soft spot for children. Despite his large size and frightful appearance and stern, stoic demeanor, he is incredibly gentle with both his words and his actions around Hiro and others he's determined to protect. When Hiro is feeling lost or confused, Baymax is often ready with fatherly wisdom, or in some cases just an awful joke. He's capable of guilt, shame, frustration, and any other range of negative emotions as well, but never lashes out physically because of them.

However, despite how gentle Baymax is with those he cares about, he's also a six-foot weapon and is not afraid to utilize his assets to do his job as both a bodyguard and a superhero. Baymax has no qualms about hurting humans, though he's aware of his strength and shows good judgment and restraint when appropriate.

Baymax is completely devoted to his role as Hiro's guardian, though as the years have passed his definition of how to protect Hiro has shifted. In the beginning, Hiro was someone to be shielded and protected. But as he grew and settled into his role with Big Hero 6, the partnership between Hiro and Baymax leveled out. More and more Baymax was working with Hiro instead of for him, and like any good father he's proud to aid his son as he grows up and becomes independent and self-sufficient, both on and off the battlefield. As much as he loves Hiro, he doesn't coddle or smother the boy; Baymax takes steps to ensure that Hiro takes his responsibilities seriously, doing things like dragging him out of bed for school or lecturing him when Baymax feels he's acted out of line.

Somewhere along the line, Baymax ceased to use the "master" epithet with Hiro completely. Now, despite being a robot built to serve Hiro, he considers himself a member of the team on equal footing with his teammates, and will not hesitate to demand the respect that comes with it. Though there's no official leader of the team, Baymax can and will take charge and give orders if he feels it's appropriate; Likewise, he'll take orders from another teammate if he feels their judgment and authority is sound.

Given how chaotic a few members of the team can be sometimes, Baymax has settled into the role of Team Dad, whether he likes it or not. (He likes it. Usually.)

POWER:
  • Synthformer: Baymax can shift between his robot body and his human disguise, which was designed to look like a frightfully large (but impeccably well-dressed) man.
  • Robotic Body: Because of the way he was designed, Baymax has incredible strength, speed, and ability to jump -- particularly when aided by thrusters. He can also pick up on and broadcast various wireless signals, and do general computer things. He can also deploy sensors that will record a scene in intricate detail, allowing it to be played back as images, video, or even a VR or AR environment if the technology was available. Also, rocket launchers in his arms.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[ Baymax is in his human guise for this post. He knows that given the nature of this place, his more robotic appearance may not be as unwelcome as it might be back home, he still would rather not make anyone too uncomfortable to answer. ]

My name is Baymax. I apologize to anyone if this is a bother, but I'm taking charge of a young boy and I'd like to know what responsibilities and duties are expected of ImPort children here.

I understand that children are expected to work jobs? While I understand teaching responsibility is important, I feel it is far more appropriate for those lessons to be taught in school, particularly here where they are expected to take on the burden of superpowers as well. Forgive me if I'm overstepping my boundaries, but shouldn't there be more emphasis on allowing the younger ImPorts to retain what childhood they have left?
